CANON SUPERPOWERS

CANON SUPERPOWERS

Only characters who have a superpower(s) in their home canon have the potential to keep it in the game universe. Characters that have no canon superpowers can only opt to give their character a magic weapon, magic, or nothing at all. Players also cannot bring over CRAU superpowers they gained from another game. The game allows some canon powers because some characters would be upset to lose what they have from home, but the mods are trying to limit blank slate general superpowers in game for two reasons 1) they can be somewhat OP for a fantasy setting, and 2) because they find judging more limited spells on apps to be easier than full superpower sets.

Many superpowers will need to be nerfed. While the mods can help players figure out how to fit their character's powers in during app revisions, players can use this page to try to nerf them on their own when apping.

As a general rule of thumb, the more powers a character has, the weaker each individual power will be. The mods will also factor in non-powers related abilities, like combat and survival skills when deciding on power levels. A character who is an expert combatant may potentially have their powers be weaker than someone with no fighting skills. Weaknesses or negative side effects of powers can also potentially affect power levels, allowing powers to be nerfed slightly less than they might have been otherwise, since there's a negative to balance the scales.

Due to the individualized nature of accepting superpowers for the game, we may ask for powers revisions on quite a few apps. For that reason, players should consider the powers section to be more of a proposal to the mods than anything else. If the revisions process happens for an app, the mods will be happy to work with players to nail down powers that will work in the game, and we will rarely ever reject an app for a powers issue alone.

Powers will stay consistent from when the app is approved onward. Unlike the magic system, superpowers will not be allowed any power gains or the ability to increase in strength. To compensate for that, they'll be approved at a slightly higher level from the getgo. (ie they'll be at a level the magic users will have to work up to over time). Characters will canon powers can get (2) magical item as AC rewards.

Powers based on a technological device will be allowed only on a limited basis. Characters may only retain these powers by having the abilities of the device magically internalized to be innate and they still may also be nerfed. For example, a Green Lantern would lose their power ring but potentially have internalized will-based constructs. However, due to power rings being very overpowered, many of the ring's powers would likely be nerfed and the constructs would have more limitations than canon.

Power nerfing may be highly variable based on the character and the power(s). The main goal of power nerfing is partly to put all characters on somewhat equal ground, but it's also for the mods to nip any powers that we foresee as being potentially game or plot-breaky in the future, which is partly based on future plans players will not be privy to. So we may sometimes ask for a power to be nerfed that may seem initially harmless because it has "dungeon bypass" capabilities, or because we know it may interfere with a later plot element.

Powers on the banned/limited list are prohibited or must be weakened appropriately. See the banned and limited powers list.

The mods will help players of characters with unusual cases. If your character has a combination of magic and superpowers, innate magic you'd like to work into the magic system, or some other unusual setup with powers, the mods will help you figure out how to fit at least some of the characters abilities into one of the power systems. If you're unsure of how to do it on your own, feel free to contact us for help!

EXAMPLE POWERSETS

Here are some examples to help players figure out what level powers have to be to be approved.

ONE POWER:

CAPTAIN AMERICA: From Marvel's cinematic universe, Captain America would be allowed to enter the game with his full supersoldier physique (moderately enhanced strength, reflexes, agility, etc.) completely intact.

DEADPOOL: From the movie Deadpool, Deadpool's healing factor is extremely potent, but has downsides in that it isn't instantaneous and doesn't free him from pain. The mix of extreme usefulness and limitations mean it could be kept fully intact.

PROFESSOR XAVIER: From the X-Men movies, the telepathy of movieverse Professor X is very powerful, allowing him to read and control the minds of others, however, he can't focus it on large masses of people without technological enhancement. The movie version of Professor X is limited enough to be allowed in without being nerfed.

TWO POWERS:

SPIDER-MAN: From Marvel's cinematic universe, Spider-Man could potentially keep his two powers of enhanced spider-like physique (mildly enhanced agility, strength, reflexes) and "Spider Sense" (the ability to instinctually sense oncoming danger) relatively intact, as they're relatively low powered.

TSUYA ASUI: From My Hero Academia, Tsuyu has two powers: a froglike physique (which gives her enhanced agility, a frog-like sticky tongue, and the ability to stick to walls) and the ability to camouflage herself to blend in with her surroundings.

THREE OR MORE POWERS:

NIGHTCRAWLER: Nightcrawler from Marvel Comics has multiple powers that are all relatively low level. He could retain his teleportation but it would need to be slightly nerfed from the comics to be only within range of sight. Alongside that, he could also retain his mildly enhanced agility and reflexes (but only at the high end of the human norm), night vision, and ability to blend into shadows.

THE ULTIMATE EXAMPLE

To show how a single character has multiple options for powersets, here is an example of a single overpowered character and possible powersets based on the previous rules.

SUPERGIRL: From the TV show, Supergirl has many different abilities: superstrength, invulnerability, flying, heatvision, superspeed super hearing, super vision, and superbreath that lets her freeze things or blow at them with great force. To work her into the game, a player would first have to remove or nerf her abilities that are on the banned power list: the flight would have to be removed entirely, and the superstrength, superspeed, and invulnerability would have to be removed or dialed down. Then the powers would have to be chosen from what's left.

ONE POWER:

She could keep one very powerful ability, like retaining her full heatvision, which is very powerful and hot enough to melt metal. All other powers would have to be removed.

or
TWO POWERS:

She could retain two powers, like a nerfed version of her superstrength (allowing her to lift up to 500 lbs) and enhanced physical endurance that makes it so extreme force or magic is required to injure her. All other powers would have to be removed.

or
THREE OR MORE POWERS:

She could retain multiple powers but all at a very low level. For instance, mildly enhanced physique (with strength and durability only at the high end of what's possible for humans), mildly enhanced senses (being able to see clearly for miles and hear people coming from a distance but not being able to hear things like heartbeats), and super breath that allows her to blow a strong wind at someone (but not exceeding 40 mph and without the ability to freeze things.) All other powers would have to be removed.
